A fajtacsoport szerepe az alföldi juhászatok eredményeiben AgEcon
Monori, Istvan.
A vizsgált juhászatok a hazai átlagtól eltérő fajtaösszetételűek és nagyobb nyájméretűek, de a nagyobb állományokhoz korszerűtlen technológia társul, ami korlátozza a potenciális hozamok elérését. A költségek szerkezetéből kitűnik, hogy a takarmányköltségek mellett a személyi jellegű költségek aránya igen magas a vizsgált gazdaságok állománykoncentrációja ellenére is, ami utal az évtizedek óta elavult tartástechnológiára is. A fajtacsoportonkénti bevételekben szembetűnő a tejelő juhászatok kimagasló teljesítménye, míg a húshasznú és keresztezett fajtáknál ez alig haladja meg a merinó fajtacsoportét. A méretcsoportok szerinti árbevétel a 300–600 anyajuh/nyáj méretű gazdaságokban jelentősen meghaladja a kisebb és nagyobb méretkategóriába tartozó juhászatok...

A Revenue-Based Alternative to the Counter-Cyclical Payment Program AgEcon
Cooper, Joseph C..
This paper develops a stochastic model for comparing payments to U.S. corn producers of a revenue-based counter-cyclical payment (R-CCP) that is offered as an alternative in the 2007 House "Farm Bill" (H.R. 2419) to the current price-based CCP (P-CCP). We minimize the potential for miss-specification bias in the model by using nonparametric and semi-nonparametric approaches as specification checks in the model. Using this model, the paper examines the sensitivity of the density function for payments to changes in expected price levels. A mean-variance utility function approach is used to assess producer preferences for choice of CCP program alternative. The results show that as risk reduction instruments at the farm level, there appears to be little...

ACRE: A Revenue-Based Alternative to Price-Based Commodity Payment Programs AgEcon
Cooper, Joseph C..
This paper develops a stochastic model for estimating the probability density function of the Average Crop Revenue Election (ACRE), a revenue-based commodity support payment that is offered under the 2008 Farm Act as an alternative to the traditional suite of price-based commodity payments, that is, marketing loan benefits and counter-cyclical payments. We minimize the potential for miss-specification bias in the model by using nonparametric and semi-nonparametric approaches as specification checks in the model. Our simulation results show that adding ACRE revenue payments to gross revenue reduced the downside risk in revenue for corn, wheat, and soybean farmers in 2009 in the four locations examined, with reductions ranging from 4% to 25%. Integrating...

BASE REVENUE PROTECTION AND REVENUE COUNTERCYCLICAL PROGRAMS FOR CORN IN NORTH DAKOTA AgEcon
Aakre, Dwight G.; Haugen, Ronald H.; Swenson, Andrew L..
The National Corn Growers Association Public Policy Team’s Base Revenue Projection Program (BRP) and the Revenue Countercyclical Program (RCCP) were analyzed. The analysis was done for corn using the BRP-RCCP calculator, as developed by the National Corn Growers Association. Three representative counties (Richland, Barnes and Foster) were chosen in North Dakota. Historic and projected data were used to analyze 2002 to 2010 crop years. A comparison of the BRP-RCCP programs to the current farm program was done. For 2002 to 2005, Barnes County would have received more total payments under the BRP-RCCP program than with the current farm program. The gain would have been $24.12 per acre during the four years. Richland and Foster counties would have received...

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate residual feed intake (RFI), residual intake and body weight gain (RIG) and their relationship with other traits of efficiency, performance, and economic analysis of sheep. Lambs (n = 102) were evaluated during 56 days and a herd consisting of 500 ewes was simulated with the mean of dry matter intake (DMI) and final body weight of the lambs, the same as that of the experimental lambs. The lambs were fed hay-based diet of Tifton 85 (Cynodon spp.), corn, and soybean in the voluminous:concentrate ratio of 35:65. Residual feed intake and RIG were correlated with DMI, feed conversion ratio, and feed efficiency. Residual intake and body weight gain were positively correlated with average daily gain, relative...

Farm-Level Analysis of Risk Management Proposals AgEcon
Babcock, Bruce A.; Hart, Chad E.; Adams, Gary M.; Westhoff, Patrick C..
This paper presents a detailed report of the representative farm analysis (summarized in FAPRI Policy Working Paper #01-00). At the request of several members of the Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry of the U.S. Senate, we have continued to analyze the impacts of the Farmers' Risk Management Act of 1999 (S. 1666) and the Risk Management for the 21st Century Act (S. 1580). Earlier analysis reported in FAPRI Policy Working Paper #04-99 concentrated on the aggregate net farm income and government outlay impacts. The representative farm analysis is conducted for several types of farms, including both irrigated and non-irrigated cotton farms in Tom Green County, Texas; dryland wheat farms in Morton County, North Dakota and Sumner County, Kansas;...

Incentives for Residential Water Conservation: Water Price, Revenue, and Consumer Equity in Florida AgEcon
Rawls, Colin; Borisova, Tatiana; Berg, Sanford; Burkhardt, Jeffrey.
Economic theory suggests that price incentives can be used to encourage water conservation in residential consumers. Conservation water rates are designed to send price signals that encourage households to reduce discretionary water use in the long term. However, it is not always clear that conservation rates effectively provide meaningful incentives. Utilities themselves may also not have strong incentives to implement conservation rates. If conservation rates have a negative impact on revenue, or if they lead to increased revenue variability, utilities may have a disincentive to use them. In addition, block pricing structures (where unit water rate increases with water usage) may be inequitable, in the sense that the “revenue burden” is borne...

Livestock Revenue Insurance AgEcon
Hart, Chad E.; Babcock, Bruce A.; Hayes, Dermot J..
This study outlines several possible structures for livestock revenue insurance. The policies take the form of an exotic option—an Asian basket option. The actuarially fair premiums for these policies are equal to the prices of the options they represent. Due to the complexity of pricing Asian basket options, we have combined two techniques for pricing options to reach the actuarially fair premiums. Projected premiums, producer welfare, and program efficiency are evaluated for the insurance products and existing market tools. Using efficiency ratios and certainty equivalent returns, we compare the insurance policies to strategies involving existing futures and options.

Payments under the Average Crop Revenue Program: Implications for Government Costs and Producer Preferences AgEcon
Cooper, Joseph C..
This paper develops a stochastic model for comparing payments to U.S. corn producers under the U.S. Senate’s Average Crop Revenue Program (ACR) versus payments under the price-based marketing loan benefit and countercyclical payment programs. Using this model, the paper examines the sensitivity of the density function for payments to changes in expected price levels. We also assess the impact of the choice of yield aggregation used in the ACR payment rate on the mean and variance of farm returns. We find that ACR payments lower the producer’s coefficient of variation of total revenue more than does the price-based support, although ACR may not raise mean revenue as much. While corn farmers in the heartland states might still prefer to receive the...

Resource Rent Mechanisms in Australian Primary Industries: Some Observations and Issues AgEcon
Rodgers, Trudi; Webster, Stewart.
Resource rents represent a return to the community for the exclusive use of resources and therefore are quite distinct from the recovery of governmental regulatory or operating costs. While the current framework for resource rents in Australian primary industries is providing financial benefit for Australian governments, it is uncertain whether the current policy settings are providing an appropriate community return. This paper discusses the theory underpinning resource rents and conducts a multijurisdictional comparison focusing on the minerals and fisheries industries to aid analysis of the role resource rent taxation plays in the existing management of Australian primary industries.

Three production systems for sheep (Low - L, Medium - M and High - H technology), with increasing technological levels, were studied under conditions in the Center-west of Brazil, to determine economic weights and selection indices of important traits. Receipts and costs were simulated using an economic simulator to calculate the structure of the operational costs. Only characteristics that were responsible for more than 10% of the profit were studied, which included: number of weaned lambs, food consumption (ewe and lamb), weight of carcass and weight of female lambs sold for reproduction. Regardless of the index used (profitability or yield) or system (L, M or H), the economic weights are larger for the number of lambs weaned per ewe. With improvement in...

U.S. Farm Policy and the Variability of Commodity Prices and Farm Revenues AgEcon
Lence, Sergio H.; Hayes, Dermot J..
A dynamic, three-commodity rational-expectations storage model is used to compare the impact of the Federal Agricultural Improvement and Reform (FAIR) Act of 1996 with a freemarket policy and with the agricultural policies that preceded the FAIR Act. Results support the hypothesis that the changes made when FAIR was enacted did not lead to permanent significant increases in the volatility of farm prices or revenues. An important finding is that the main economic impacts of the Pre-FAIR scenario, relative to the free-market regime were to transfer income to farmers and to substitute government storage for private storage in a way that did little to support prices or to stabilize farm incomes.
